- by deducting the basic oxygen uptake of sludge blank samples (Flasks 2/3 and 2/4)
- proportionally to account for the differences between actual and nominal concentrations of test and reference substance

BOD5 / COD results

Results with reference substance:
Degradation of Sodium Benzoate exceeds 40% after 7 days and 65% after 14 days (observed 72% biodegradation on Day 7 and 83% on Day 14): the activity of the inoculum is thus verified and the test is considered valid.

Ambretone undergoes 86% biodegradation after 28 days in the test conditions. Biodegradation starts (exceeds 10%) on day 3 (11% biodegradation) and reaches 72% at the end of the 10-day window (days 3 to 13).
Thus, Ambretone should be regarded as readily biodegradable according to this test.
The curves obtained with the reference substance alone and with Ambretone + reference substance show no toxic effect of Ambretone on the micro-organism at the test concentration.
