Description of key information

Monitoring studies have been carried out on the air quality of domestic houses and offices.  For domestic houses TPP was detected in two of the six houses monitored at a concentration of  0.01 µg/m3. In another study of public buildings both indoor and outdoor air contained <0.01 µg/m3, in indoor particulate matter 220 mg/kg TPP were found in one sample but all other samples had concentrations of <= 3 mg/kg. Monitoring was also carried out in offices in which new computer equipment was installed. Before installation, and in offices not containing the equipment, air concentrations were 0.7 ng/m3, this increased to 84 ng/m3one day after installation and decreased to 39 ng/m3after eight days. . In a smaller office with brand-new computer equipment, the TPP level was 94 ng/m3one day after computer installation. This had decreased to 10 ng/m3within 150days.

Monitoring studies have also been carried out on rivers. The level of TPP in the river Ruhr increased from values below the limit of detection at its source to values of 200 ng/L in the Dortmund region. In two tributaries values of 400 ng/L were found. Even higher values were found in a creek dominated by asewage works (2000 ng/L) and in the river Emscher (3400 ng/L). However, bankfiltered ground water contained <1 ng/L - the detection limit.

Monitoring of sewage treatment plants in the US showed that there was an eight fold decrease in TPP concentration, from 16 µg/L to 2 µg/L, between the inlet and outlet of the treatment plant. In another study in Sweden concentrations of 3 µg/L of TPP were found in the sewage outlet of one of three reatment plants tested. In Germany a small creek which was dominated by the outflow of a sewage treatment plant, 2 µg/l were found. TPP concentrations reached up to 0.280 µg/l in the river Ruhr  (region with heavy industry and mining) in Germany, whilst in the Delaware river in the US concentrations of  up to 0.3 µg/L were found. In another study from the US TPP was found in 14.1 % of 85 samples with a median of 0.040 µg/l and a maximum value of 0.22 µg/L.
