Description of key information

According to Commission Directive 96/12/EC, studies are required when an active substance is likely to partition to, and persist in, aquatic sediments. In cases where methyl bromide is applied in enclosed spaces it is unlikely to contaminate aquatic systems. In cases where methyl bromide is applied in the soil, or cases where it may leak from the enclosed spaces, it can be assumed that due to the low adsorption of methyl bromide, connection to suspended sediments will be unlikely. Also, since methyl bromide is highly volatile, it is unlikely to persist in aquatic ecosystems. Therefore acute and chronic tests of the effects on sediment dwelling organisms are not required.
