Description of key information

The key study was an activated sludge respiration inhibition test on the substance conducted in accordance with an established guideline.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
20.7 mg/L

Additional information

The inhibition of respiration of activated sludge micro-organisms form a primarily domestic sewage source was determined in the key study. The values for the 3-h EC20, EC50, and EC80 for the test substance were reported as 10.4 mg/L, 20.7 mg/L and 41.2 mg/L, respectively; values or the NOEC and EC10 were not reported.

In addition, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and/or the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the substance on seven strains of bacteria and five strains of ascomycete fungi were determined in three guideline studies. The most sensitive fungi tested were Geotrichum candidum, with an MIC and MBC both reported as 0.015625%, and Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus and Trichophyton mentagrophytes, each with an MBC of 0.015625%.  The lowest MIC (0.015625%) in bacteria were reported for Escherischia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella choleraesius, and Enterobacter aerogenes; the lowest MBC (0.015625%) in bacteria was reported in Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus.
