In an EU A10 test using a fire train mould (250mm long) and a flame from a gas burner (min diameter 5mm) the test substance melted to a yellow/brown liquid. Once ignited, it produced an orange localised flame which extinguished a few seconds after the test flame was removed. The substance does not ignite under these test conditions, and is therefore not expected to self-ignite.

The CETATS substance was evaluated by reference to table A6.1 in the Recommendation for the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (5th Edition). The structure and composition of the substance were not found to contain chemical groups that indicate explosive properties. Therefore, CETATS is predicted negative for explosive properties and fulfils the data waiving criteria for REACH registration and also does not need to be classified as explosive Class 1 for transport.

The oxygen balance is used as a standard check for potential explosive hazard during chemical development work. It is also listed as a method for determining when testing is not required for REACH or where transport classification is not required if the substance contains explosive groups with chemical properties. The oxygen balance is calculated for the chemical reaction: CxHyOz + [x + (y/4) - (z/2)] O2 → x CO2 + (y/2) H2O Using the formula: Oxygen balance = -1600 [2x + (y/2)-z]/molecular weight; CETATS Molecular Formula: C26H49NO3S Molecular Weight: 455.73 Oxygen balance = - 258.0 A result of below -200 indicates that explosive properties are not predicted for CETATS.

Becasue CETATS is a solid that can exist as a powder, a precautionary CLP classification has been added: " Combustible Dust" under Section 2.1
