Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The inhibition of degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when the reaction mass is introduced into biological treatment plants in appropriately low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

For the mixture no results of short-term respiration tests performed with non-adapted domestic sludge are available. Therefore, a conclusion by analogy approach to the structure analogue isopentyl acetate (CAS 123-92-2) to one of the major components (2-methylbutyl acetate, CAS 624-41-9) has been applied. In this test with activated sludge of a predominantly domestic sewage treatment plant the inhibition of oxygen consumption was examined according to OECD guideline 209 [BASF, 1993]. The EC20 was determined to be >1000 mg/L.

This result is supported by a short-term respiration test performed for the mixture with industrial sludge. In this test a EC10 > 720 mg/L were determined [BASF 1987].

Since the second study was carried out with industrial sludge instead domestic sludge the EC20 value of the first study was used for PNEC STP derivation.
