Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

EC50 (48h) = 2.5 mg/L for Daphnia magna
LC50 (96h) = 9.9 mg/L for Crangon crangon
Nevertheless this endpoint is not used for PNEC-calculation as PNEC-values are calculated on the basis of a HC5-approach.

Additional information

The toxicity of alcohol ethoxylate (C9-11, < 2.5 EO, CAS 68439-46-3) to aquatic invertebrates was investigated in two studies. The key study was performed with the water flea Daphnia magna under static conditions and without analytical monitoring (Stephenson, 1985). In this test which did not follow a defined guideline, an EC50 (48h) of 2.5 mg/L was determined.

In order to include information about the effect of alcohol ethoxylate on marine species, a supporting study with brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) was added (Douglas, 1990). This test was carried out according to GLP and the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of the United Kingdom. Brown shrimp was exposed for 96 hours under semi-static conditions. The LC50 (96 h) was determined to be 9.9 mg/L.
