Description of key information
Short-term data for fish, invertebrates and algae are available. All studies reported LC50s above the limit of water solubility.
96-hour fish LC50 = >1000 mg/l (nominal)
48-hour daphnia LC50 = 7.5 mg/l (nominal)
96-hour algae EC50 (cell number and chrlorophyll a) = >1000 mg/l (nominal)
Long term data are available for aquatic invertebrates. In a recently completed OECD 211 daphnia reproduction study no test item related effects on reproduction, mortality or growth were observed at any exposure concentration and a No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) of 0.0062mg/l (geometric mean measured concentration) was reported. This is in excess of the limit of water solubility.
The 96-hour algal EC50 based on both cell number and growth rate was >1000 mg/l. The EC10 (cell number) can be estimated as being in the range of 360 to 600 ppm. This exceeds the solubility of the test compound (0.0015 mg/l at 25°C) and it is therefore concluded that Sancticizer ® 278 is not toxic to algae.
The available data indicate that Sancticizer ® 278 is not acutely toxic to fish, daphnia and algae at the limit of solubility. No chronic effects were observed in daphnia or algae below the limit of water solubility.
It can be concluded that Sancticizer ® 278 poses no hazard to the aquatic environment due to having no measurable effects below the limit of solubilit.
