Additional information
The subchronic toxicity of zinc 3,5-bis(alpha-methylbenzyl)salicylate to the fresh-water fish species, Brachydanio rerio, was determined as described in the OECD Guideline no. 204 and the OECD principles of Good Laboratory Practice. A study conducted in accordance with this Guideline is considered a short-term toxicity test by ECHA.
The test was carried out as a semi-static test with replacement of the test solutions three times a week. The test was carried out with 2 x 10 fishes (duplicate for each concentration). The exposure time was 2 weeks. The nominal concentrations tested were 0, 0.56, 1.0, 1.8, 3.2, 5.6 and 10 mg. L-1.
The results of the test were:
4d LC50 (mortality): 5.9 mg. l-1
14d LC50 (mortality): 5.7 mg. l-1
14d LC100 (mortality): 10.0 mg. l-1
14d NOEC (mortality = 14d LC0) *: 3.2 mg. l-1
14d NOEC (condition): 1.8 mg. l-1
14d NOEC (growth): > 5.6 < 10.0 mg. l-1
In a second supporting study, the acute toxicity of a mixture containing zinc 3,5-bis(alpha-methylbenzyl)salicylate to Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was evaluated. The NOEC was 3.2 mg/L and the LC50 was 4.2 mg/L.
In a third supporting study, the acute toxicity of a mixture containing zinc 3,5-bis(alpha-methylbenzyl)salicylate (irradiated for 80 hours) to Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was evaluated. The NOEC was < 100 mg/L.
Justification for read-across
These two supporting studies were conducted using a liquid mixture containing 30.2% zinc 3,5-bis(alpha-methylbenzyl)salicylate.
The remaining substances present in the mixture include:
- 5.5% PSMS-11
- 1.1% PVA
- 0.7% DIBLAME
- < 1% Other
- Remainder: water
PSMS-11 and PVA are not considered to be hazardous substances. DIBLAME is classified as H315: Causes skin irritation, H317: May cause an allergic skin reaction and H411: Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects. However, the concentration of DIBLAME in this mixture is below that which triggers classification of the mixture for these hazards. Therefore, it is considered justified to read-across from this mixture to zinc 3,5-bis(α-methylbenzyl)salicylate.
