Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

A study with hydrogen sulphidein Daphnia magna is available.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The toxicity of the breakdown product hydrogen sulphide was investigated in a study with Daphnia magna. The 48 hour EC50 forDaphniamagnawas calculated to be 0.0036 mM or 0.1224 mg/L (based on measured hydrogen sulphide concentrations); equivalent to 0.16 mg/L phosphorus pentasulphide.

Phosphorus pentasulphide reacts rapidly with moisture or water in the environment to form hydrogen sulphide and phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid will dissociate to form environmentally ubiquitous ionic species, but may potentially have a secondary effect due to pH change. Hydrogen sulphide is considered likely to be the more toxic of the breakdown products and is therefore relevant for the derivation of PNEC values.
