Experimental data on the acute an chronic toxicity of CAS 87-62-7 to aquatic algae are available.
The effect of 2,6 -xylidine on the growth of Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was studied according to OECD Guideline 201 and under GLP. The test concentrations were analytically verified. The test was performed under static conditions. The 72-h NOEC value on the growth rate of the organisms was determined to be 32 mg/L and the 72-h EC50 value on the growth rate was found to be above 100 mg/L (measured, arithmetic mean; NITE Japan, 2002).
A publication of Aruoja et al. (2011) supports the results from the key study. In a non-GLP study conducted similar to OECD Guideline 201 a number of diverse anilines and phenols along with 2,6 -Xylidine (CAS 87-62-7) were tested. The number of replicates of the test concentration solutions was less than required by the guideline (two instead of three). The number of control replicates was sufficient. However, the test was run twice. The test species was Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The test was run with static conditions for 72 -h of exposure. The 72 -h EC50 value for growth rate was determined to be 107 mg/L (nominal, Aruoja et al., 2011)
No analytical verification of the test solutions was performed by Aruoja et al. (2011).
However, the substance is assumed to be stable due to the substance's water solubility (7200 mg/L BASF AG, 1985, study no.: 185.0018.1), its low vapor pressure (VP = 20 Pa @25°C; BASF AG, 1986) and its low Henry's Law Constant (HLC = 0.235 Pa m³/mol, calculated with EPI Suite v4.11, BASF SE 2019).
Moreover, it is concluded, that significant adsorption is not expected for the substance (Koc: 1.32 – 1.48 for pH 5.8 – 7.2, 25 °C, Bronner et al, 2011, published).
Therefore, based on the available experimental data the substance is considered to be with high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic algae.
