Description of key information

Edetic acid is harmful to terrestrial organisms

Additional information

Experimental data are available for edetic acid or members of subcategory 1 investigating the short-term toxicity to earthworms and terrestrial plants. Most conservative effect values for the substance itself or suitable read across substances (within subcategory) showed an LC50(14d) of 156.46 mg/kg dw (nominal) for mortality of Eisenia fetida (OECD 207) and 21d-NOEC values of >= 333 mg/kg soil dw for Avena sativa, 160 mg/kg soil dw for Brassica napus and 111 mg/kg soil dw for Glycine max based on nominal (analytically verified) concentrations, respectively. Thus, based on the WoE read across approach it can be concluded that edetic acid and other members of subcategory 1 are harmful to terrestrial organisms. The lowest NOEC value of 111 mg/kg soil dw for growth of Glycine max obtained from a subcategory 1b substance (EDTA-iron complex) was used for PNEC derivation in a worst-case approach.
