Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The test item is a liquid at ambient temperature. The freezing point was determined to be within the range -17°C to -4.7°C (< 0°C).

No boiling point can be determined as test item started to decompose at 201°C.

The density was determined according to the hydrometer method and found to be 1.22 g/m3 at 20°C.

Due to a combination of low water solubility and water reactivity calculated octanol/water partition coefficient values had to be determined for all MDI substances except the monomeric MDI substances. It should however be recognised that due to the high reactivity of the NCO group to both water and octanol, these octanol-water partition coefficient values have no scientific meaning. An estimated octanol/water partition coefficient of the material was calculated for the substance to be 8.56 (Chilworth, 2009). However, this octanol-water partition coefficient value has no scientific meaning and should therefore be disregarded.

Measuring the water solubility of MDI substances is technically and practically not feasible due to the low solubility and high reactivity of the NCO group with water. Theoretical values for the water solubility have been calculated from the partition coefficient, which in turn has been estimated based on a group contribution method (US EPA (2012): WSKOWWIN). All MDI substances have calculated values several orders of magnitude lower compared to the ‘Monomeric MDI’ substances and as these consist of several constituents with varying low calculated water solubilities, they can be marked as less than 0.03 mg/L which is the water solubility for 4,4'-MDI. The estimated water solubility for the substance was 5.17 E- 08 g.L-1 (6.00E-07 g.L-1 Estimated using Meylan Equations) (Chilworth, 2009). However, this value has no scientific meaning and should therefore be disregarded.

A new study to determine the viscosity of the substance was performed at Dekra (2019). The test is conducted in accordance with ISO 3104:1994 and OECD Test Guideline 114 and gave the following results: at 20°C (mean of 2 runs) 1354 mm2.s-1; at 40°C (mean of 2 runs) 222.1 mm2.s-1.

During the flashpoint testing, no cool flames were observed. Ignition produced clean burning. An exothermic reaction of 3°C magnitude was detected at 464 °C, but no ignition observed. The flash point was determined to be 221°C @ 101.3 kPa (closed cup).

4,4'-MDI homopolymer is neither explosive and have no oxidising properties. The estimated vapour presure at 20°C was determined to be:  5.4 * 10-06 hPa (BASF, 2016).
