Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

General Advice: Have Material Data Sheet readily available. Have dry cloth or towels readily available. Take off contaminated clothing and shoes immediately. Show the safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.

Inhalation: Remove from exposure, lie down. Artificial respiration and/or oxygen may be necessary. Call a physician immediately.

Skin contact: Remove from exposure. Take off contaminated clothing and shoes immediately Carefully wipe away until product is fully removed from skin using a dry and adsorbent cloth. Then wash off with plenty of water. Call a physician immediately.

Eye Contact: Eye lids should be wiped with a clean dry cloth to remove excess liquid. Wash eyes with large amounts of water while lifting lower and upper lids. Call a physician immediately. Washing should continue until medical attention is obtained.

Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. Immediately rinse mouth out with water and give large quantities (3 – 4 glasses) of water to drink. If vomiting occurs, give fluids again. Call a physician immediately.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable Extinguishing Media Foam - acid resistant foam preferred. Carbon dioxide (CO2). Dry powder.

Titanium tetrachloride itself is neither flammable nor explosive.

Unsuitable Extinguishing Media: Water (in all forms).

Special protective equipment for fire-fighters: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and protective suit.

Additional information: Titanium tetrachloride reacts vigorously with water. Contact with water when in a vessel or confined space can generate dangerous pressure and heat.

Only if tanks/containers have not been damaged: Cool tanks, closed containers and pipes exposed to fire with water spray  to prevent pressure build-up.

Do not allow run-off from fire fighting to enter drains or water courses.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions: Keep people away from and upwind of spill/leak. Wear personal protective equipment. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing.

Environmental precautions: Avoid subsoil penetration. Do not allow to enter drainage system, surface or ground water.

Methods for cleaning up: Contain spillage, soak up with non-combustible absorbent material, (e.g. sand, earth, diatomaceous earth, vermiculite) and transfer to an acid resistant container for disposal according to local / national regulations. Never soak up spilled or leaked acids and bases with sawdust, wood chips or similar materials.

Remark: packaging made of polyethylene and polypropylene are not suitable, they will become fragile and brittle in contact with liquid titanium tetrachloride .

Handling and storage

Plan first aid action before beginning work with this product. Wear personal protective equipment. Keep containers tightly sealed. Ensure good ventilation/exhaustion at the workplace.

Requirements for storage areas and containers: Keep containers tightly closed in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Store in original container. Prevent any penetration into the ground.

Advice on common storage: Store under dry conditions. Must be stored in a spill containment system  (retention area of adequate capacity, having an impervious floor). Possibility to collect other products than titanium tetrachloride in the spill containment system must be avoided. For fixed storage tanks a blanketing of the tanks with a neutral and highly dry gas (e.g. nitrogen or argon) is recommended.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Engineering measures: Ensure adequate ventilation, especially in confined areas.

Personal protective equipment:

Respiratory protection : Suitable respiratory equipment: When workers are facing concentrations above the exposure limit they must use appropriate certified respirators.

Eye protection: Tightly fitting safety goggles; face-shield.

Hand protection : Acid proof gauntlet gloves.

Skin and Body Protection: Long sleeved shirt and trousers of impervious material. Acid proof apron and boots.

Stability and reactivity

Stability: Stable under recommended storage conditions.

Conditions to avoid: Exposure to moisture.

Materials to avoid: Water, (in all forms, even in traces), alcohols, reactive metals

Hazardous decomposition products: Gaseous hydrogen chloride (HCl), hydrochloric acid mist (HCl aqu.), titanium oxychloride

Hazardous reactions: Potential for exothermic hazard - avoid moisture.

Hazardous polymerization: Hazardous polymerization does not occur.

Disposal considerations

Product: Dispose of as hazardous waste in compliance with local and national regulations.
