Details on test conditions:
The effects of SKW Cyanamid L500 (a 51.1 % (w/w) aqueous solution of cyanamide) on Lemna gibba G3 was determined in 20XAAP nutrient medium. Three replicates at test concentrations of 0.32, 1.0, 3.2, 10.0 and 32.0 mg of a 51.1 % (w/w) aqueous solution of cyanamide/L, were incubated for 7 days and frond counts were taken on days 3, 5 and 7, corresponding to 0.16, 0.51, 1.64, 5.11 and 16.35 mg ai/L. Additionally, a control was tested in parallel. The samples of the test medium were analysed by a HPLC method using an UV/VIS-detector.

Details on results:
The doubling time of fronds in the controls was 1.7 d (39.5 h) and thus less than 2.5 d (60 h), corresponding to an approximately 19-fold increase in 7 days. The test item had a statistically significant inhibitory effect on the growth of Lemna gibba after the exposure of 7 days first at the nominal concentration of 3.2 mg test item/L, corresponding to 1.63 mg ai/L. The 7-day NOEC was determined at the nominal concentration of 1 mg test item/L, corresponding to 0.51 mg ai/L, since up to and including this test concentration the mean biomass, mean growth rates and the dry weight of Lemna gibba were not significantly lower than in the control. At the nominal test concentrations of 0.32 to 3.2 mg/L, corresponding to 0.163 to 1.63 mg ai/l, the shape of fronds and colonies after the test period of 7 days was not different to those in the control. However, at the two highest test concentrations of 10.0 and 32.0 mg/L (5.1 and 16.35 mg ai/L), the fronds were pale and small.
Results with reference substance (positive control):
No positive control
Reported statistics and error estimates:
The test groups were significantly different from controls according to the Dunnett-test criteria, p < 0.05.

In the test medium the test item was sufficiently stable during the test period of 7 days. Therefore, all reported biological results are related to the nominal concentrations of the test item.

Conclusions:
Growth inhibition values obtained with the 51.1 % (w/w) aqueous solution of cyanamide on Lemna gibba were as follows: Considering the area under the growth curve (biomass), a 7-day EC50 of 4.56 mg of a 51.1 % (w/w) aqueous solution of cyanamide/L (2.33 mg as/L) was calculated, the corresponding NOEC was 1.0 mg of a 51.1 % (w/w) aqueous solution of cyanamide/L (0.5 mg as/L). With respect to the growth rate, the 7-day EC50 was 10.98 mg of a 51.1 % (w/w) aqueous solution of cyanamide/L (5.61 mg as/L) and the respective NOEC was 1.0 mg of a 51.1 % (w/w) aqueous solution of cyanamide/L (0.5 mg as/L). Finally, for the dry weight a 7-day EC50 of 4.7 mg of a 51.1 % (w/w) aqueous solution of cyanamide/L (2.4 mg as/L) was determined with a corresponding NOEC of 1.0 mg of a 51.1 % (w/w) aqueous solution of cyanamide/L (0.5 mg as/L).
