Description of key information

Following a GLP study in accordance with EC test method A.10, barium nitrate is concluded to be not highly flammable (Sydney, 2013). From day to day handling of the substance, barium nitrate is concluded not to have pyrophoric properties nor to be flammable in contact with water.

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

Flammability.

From a flammability test (EC A.10) barium nitrate is concluded to be not highly flammable (Sydney, 2013).

Pyrophoricity.

In the daily use and handling of barium nitrate during which continuous exposure to air can occur, no spontaneous ignition is observed. The absence of structural alerts furthermore confirms that it is highly unlikely that barium nitrate has pyrophoric properties.

Flammability in contact with water.

Under conditions where barium nitrate is in contact with water no ignition and/or liberation of flammable gases is observed. The absence of structural alerts furthermore confirms that it is highly unlikely that barium nitrate is flammable in contact with water.
