Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
GLP compliance:
no
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

The substance did not propagate burning of a 200 mm length of the strip in less than four minutes, therefore burning rate test did not need to be performed.

Interpretation of results:
other: Not classified according to the CLP Regulation
Conclusions:
The test item should be considered as not highly flammable.
Executive summary:

Method

The test was performed according to the internationally accepted testing method A.10. The substance did not propagate burning of a 200 mm length of the strip in less than four minutes, therefore burning rate test did not need to be performed.

Results

The test item should be considered as not highly flammable.

Description of key information

Non flammable

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

The test was conducted according to internationally accepted testing method A.10. Acid Red 357 did not propagate burning of a 200 mm length of the strip in less than four minutes, therefore burning rate test did not need to be performed.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008), 2.7 section, flammable solids, powdered, granular or pasty substances or mixtures shall be classified as readily combustible solids when the time of burning of one or more of the test runs, performed in accordance with the test method described in Part III, sub-section 33.2.1, of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, is less than 45 seconds or the rate of burning is more than 2.2 mm/s.

Acid Red 357 did not propagate burning of a 200 mm length of the strip in less than four minutes, therefore it can be considered as non flammable.

In conclusion, according to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008) Acid Red 357 does not meet the criteria to be classified as flammable.
