One key study is available for this endpoint. The acute toxicity (inhibition of mobility) of the test item REACTION MASS OF AlF3/CrF3/NiF2 to Daphnia magna Straus was assessed by the GRL (2010) according to the OECD Guideline 202 and incompliance with OECD (2004) Good Laboratory Practice standards. Based on the results of preliminary test, the definitive test was performed with a nominal concentration range forming a geometric progression with a factor of 1.58, i.e. 5.1, 8.0, 12.7, 20.0, 31.6 and 50 mg/L.

 

Twenty daphnids aged from 6 to 24 hours were equally distributed among four replicates of each treatment (control include) and exposed under static conditions, in darkness and at a temperature of 20.4 ± 0.4°C for 48 hours. These organisms came from a stock breeding in the laboratory and were in good condition at the beginning of the test. Water quality was within normal limits during the toxicity test. During the toxicity test, the occurrence of immobility and the presence of insoluble material were determined visually and recorded after 0, 24, and 48 hours.

 

Analytical monitoring has been performed at the beginning and at the end of the exposure period. It consists in ionic chromatography of fluorides. In order to calculate the correlation factor between fluorides concentration and the concentration of metallic fluorides in the samples, analysis of aluminium, chromium and nickel were performed on the solutions by ICP-MS. An average factor allowing to pass from fluorides concentration to the test item (metallic fluorides) concentration can be estimated to 2.09. This calculation allows to express EC50as REACTION MASS OF AlF3/CrF3/NiF2.

 

Exposure of daphnids to the test item REACTION MASS OF AlF3/CrF3/NiF2 resulted in a 48 hour median effective concentration (EC50) of 10.2 mg/L. The 48 hour no observed effect concentration (NOEC) was 6.7 mg/L.

Based on the results of this study, the test item REACTION MASS OF AlF3/CrF3/NiF2 is considered as harmful to the aquatic organisms tested in accordance with the Directive 67/548/EC.
