Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Parent compound propyl chloroformate (CAS 109-61-5):

Significant accumulation in organisms is not to be expected.

Hydrolysis product propanol (CAS 71-23-8):

Significant accumulation in organisms is not to be expected.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Propyl chloroformate rapidly hydrolyses in contact with water to form propanol (CAS 71-23-8), hydrogen chloride (CAS 7647-01-0) and carbon dioxide (CAS 124-38-9). Due to this rapid hydrolysis, the assessment of the bioaccumulation potential of the parent compound is considered to be of low relevance.

Moreover, and in accordance with Regulation (EC) 1907/2006, Annex IX, Section 9.3.1, Column 2, the study does not need to be conducted if the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation (for instance a log Kow ≤ 3). The estimated log Kow of 1.12 indicates no significant potential for bioaccumulation (EPI Suite v4.11, KOWWIN v1.68; BASF SE, 2022). The same refers to the hydrolysis product propanol (CAS 71-23-8), which has a measured log Kow of 0.2 (OXEA, 2010; see IUCLID Ch. 4.7).
