One study, investigating the short-term toxicity to freshwater fish of Fatty acids, C14 -18 and C18 -unsatd., branched and linear, esters with trimethylolpropane (CAS-No. 85005-23-8), is used as read across forFatty acids, C14-18 and C16-18 unsatd., triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS-No. 68002-79-9). This read-across is justified in detail in the overall summary (IUCLID Section 6.1) and within the category justification in IUCLID Section 13. In this case of read-across, the best suited (highest degree of structural similarity, nearest physico-chemical properties) read-across substance was used for the assessment. Nevertheless, as it can be seen in the data matrix of the category justification in section 13 and the overall summary (IUCLID section 6.1), all reliable data in the category support the hazard assessment of each category member by showing a consistent pattern of results.

The study (Bogers, 1997) with the read-across substance Fatty acids, C14 -18 and C18 -unsatd., branched and linear, esters with trimethylolpropane (CAS-No. 85005-23-8) was performed according to OECD 203 and EU Method C.1 withCyprinus carpio andresulted in a LC50 (96 h) > 100 mg/L (nominal). No lethal or othervisible effects in carp were observed at or below 100 mg/L (nominal). At 100 mg/L the test substance drops floating at the surface of the medium. Therefore the highest concentration (100 mg/L) demonstrated aworst case.

One study (Bogers, 1997) for Fatty acids, C14-18 and C16-18 unsatd., triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS-No. 68002-79-9), supported this conclusion. But this study must be evaluated with caution,because optimum test conditions were not met. As no Water Accommodated Fraction (WAF) method was used, undissolved test material was available and could have caused physical effects. Nonetheless, reportedresults are comparable to the results of the analogue substance. The 96 h-fish study withDanio rerioindicate a LC0 = 3000 mg/L and a LC50 of 5500 mg/L, which is far in excess of the water solubility (< 1mg/L).

Based on the result from one structurally related read-across substance (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which is characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile and comparable structure, it can be concluded thatFatty acids, C14-18 and C16-18 unsatd., triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS-No. 68002-79-9)will not exhibit short-term effects to fish up to the limit of water solubility.
