Description of key information

Methyl stearate (CAS 112-61-8) is readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

One study, investigating the ready biodegradability of Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., Me esters (CAS 67762-38-3), was used as read across for methyl stearate (CAS 112-61-8). This substance is structurally and compositionally related to methyl stearate. In this GLP-study (Richterich, 2001) according to OECD 301D (Closed Bottle Test) activated sludge (domestic) was used as inoculum. At test termination after 28 days a degradation of 87% was observed and the 14 -day-window was reached. Therefore, the read across substance is readily biodegradable. Based on the category it can be concluded that methyl stearate (CAS 112-61-8) is also readily biodegradable.
