Description of key information

For acute oral toxicity there is one animal study available conducted before implementation of the OECD guidelines. The study indicated a mouse LD50 oral 1207 (1150 -1267) mg/kg bw. This result needs to be considered for classification in category 4 (acute tox.4, H302).

There are no reliable reports whatsoever on acute dermal toxicity as well as acute inhalation toxicity in the public domain.

A mouse LD50 intraperitoneal 735 (691 -781) mg/kg bw was reported for 4-Chloroacetophenone from Bekemeier and Köster 1976.

A mouse LD50 intraperitoneal 100 mg/kg bw was reported from National Technical Information Service. However, the respective test substance is not specified as to its chemical form. Therefore this data entry is disregarded.

Additional information

Please note that numerous studies are available describing the effects of chloroacetophenone, which however refer to the active ingredient CN in tear gas (CAS: 532 -27 -4, IUPAC name: 2 -chloro-1 -phenylethanone). In contrast to 2 -chloro-1 -phenylethanone, which is chlorinated at the side chain, 4´-chloroacetophenone (CAS: 99 -91 -02, IUPAC name: 1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethanone) is chlorinated at the core and therefore clearly less reactive. Thus studies using 2 -chloro-1 -phenylethanone are considered not representative for the toxicity assessment of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethanone.

Justification for classification or non-classification

1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethanone LD50 oral at 1207 (1150 -1267) mg/kg bw in mouse leads to classification in category 4 (acute tox.4, H302).
