Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

According to the REACH Regulation N. 1907 -2006, Annex VII Column 2: "The study does not need to be conducted if:

– there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule; or

– the substance contains chemical groups associated with explosive properties which include oxygen and the calculated oxygen balance is less than –200; or

– the organic substance or a homogenous mixture of organic substances contains chemical groups associated with explosive properties, but the exothermic decomposition energy is less than 500 J/g and the onset of exothermic decomposition is below 500 °C."

The test substance contains chemical groups associated with explosive properties which include oxygen and the calculated oxygen balance is -236.2 and the exothermic decomposition energy is 145.2 J/g, therefore the test doesn't need to be conducted.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the definition set out in the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008) an explosive substance or mixture is a solid or liquid substance or mixture of substances which is in itself capable by chemical reaction of producing gas at such a temperature and pressure and at such a speed as to cause damage to the surroundings. Pyrotechnic substances are included even when they do not evolve gases. Since the substance has an oxygen balance less than - 200 and the exothermic decomposition energy is less than 500 J/g and the onset of exothermic decomposition is below 500 °C the test was not conducted and the substance is considered as not explosive.
