Flammability

Justifications and discussions

Category definition:
All enzymes are built of different combinations of the same 20 common amino acids and thus the physical and chemical characteristics are very similar for different enzymes. Therefore, read-across from other enzymes for physical-chemical properties should be fully applicable.
Category description:
Cellulase and esterase, cholesterol have been tested for flammability and they had identical results: brief ignition which self-extinguished with no combustion propagation over the 2 minute test period.
Category rationale:
1. CATEGORY HYPOTHESIS
All enzymes are built of different combinations of the same 20 common amino acids and thus the physical and chemical characteristics are very similar for different enzymes. Therefore, read-across from other enzymes for physical-chemical properties should be fully applicable.

2. CATEGORY JUSTIFICATION
Flammability has been determined for cholesterol, esterase and cellulase with identical results: brief ignition but the substance does not propagate combustion. Substances are not considered to be highly flammable.

3. APPLICABILITY DOMAIN OF THE CATEGORY
All enzyme substances
