Description of key information

Two OECD 404 guideline compliant studies are provided indicating CMIT/MIT is corrosive to the skin.

An in vivo eye irritation study is presented indicating CMIT/MIT is corrosive to the eyes.

An airway irritation study (ASTM Method E981 -84) is presented indicating CMIT/MIT is irritating to the respiratory tract.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (corrosive)

Eye irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irreversible damage)

Respiratory irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irritating)

Additional information

C(M)IT/MIT is severely irritant to corrosive to the skin and eyes of rabbits in the different studies submitted.

Regarding the irritation of airways, a concentration of 69 μg/l of Kathon 886F induced a 50% reduction in the respiratory rate in mice (RD50).

Justification for classification or non-classification

CMIT/MIT has an existing harmonized classification in accordance with Annex VI Regulation EC 1272/2008 as:

Skin Corr. 1B/H314: Causes severe skin burns and eye damage C ≥ 0.6%

Eye Irrit. 2; H319: Causes serious eye irritation/Skin Irrit. 2; H315: Causes skin irritation 0.06% ≤ C < 0.6%
