Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The ions of barium m-toluate determine its fate and toxicity in the environment. Reliable data available for soluble barium substances indicate a low (if any) toxic potential of barium cations since the 3-h NOEC for respiration inhibition of barium chloride is >= 1000 mg/L (test limit of OECD TG 209). An EC10 of 543 mg/L m-toluic acid (nominal) was derived for the 3-h respiration inhibition of activated sludge whereas the corresponding EC50 is above the highest test concentration of 1000 mg/L. Further, m-toluic acid is ready biodegradable. Thus, the potential of barium m-toluate for toxicity to aquatic microorganisms is expected to be low.
