Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Aquatic toxicity studies with barium 3,5,5-trimetylhexanoate are not available.Read-across to the assessment entities soluble barium substances and trimethylhexanoic acid (and its structural analogue neodecanoic acid) is applied for the assessment of barium 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoate since the ions of barium 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoate determine its fate and toxicity in the environment. Reliable data available for soluble barium substances and neodecanoate indicate that the moiety of ecotoxicological concern are barium cations. A reliable, nominal 48h-EC50 of 14.5 mg Ba/L was determined whereas a 48 -h EL50 > 457 mg/L for Daphnia magna was derived for neodecanoic acid, the structural analogue of trimethylhexanoic acid. This is supported by QSAR-based estimations for trimethylhexanoic acid. According to the QSAR-based outcome of the model ECOSAR v.2.0, trimethylhexanoic acid has also a low potential for acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates since the 48-h LC50 was estimated with 52.3 mg/L for daphnids.
