Endpoint:
biodegradation in water: ready biodegradability
Type of information:
read-across from supporting substance (structural analogue or surrogate)
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2012
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Justification for type of information:
The substance is considered very similar to the analogue derived from vegetable oils (see section 13).The latter was tested carring out a OECD 301B study, together with the other representative samples of sulfated oils, which this read-across record refers to. Unfortunately, as stated by the Laboratory "For 7 of the 8 substances we could determine the carbon content, so that we are able to conduct the studies acc. to OECD 301 B. Only for CNH [Oils, vegetable, sulfated, ammonium salts - Editor's Note], we could not determine the carbon content because flakes were formed during analysis" (ref.: email, 2012-02-12, from RTC Lab). For this reason, an exeperimental study is not available, but given the structural similarities of the substance against the other representative samples of sulphated oils, it was not considered necessary to run again the study. Fo rmore details on the structural similarities of the sulphated oils, refer to section 13.2.

Specific details on test material used for the study:
It has been reported the test material correspondent to the analogue substance "Oils, vegetable, sulfated, ammonium salts", since animal and vegetable oils are considered to be very similar, and not only for the kind of salification. Anyway, seven test materials, analogues of the substance, were analysed:
Oils, fish, sulfated, sodium salts (P2)
Rape oil, sulfated, sodium salt (CP12)
Rape oil, sulfated, sodium salt (C5)
Rape oil, sulfated, sodium salt (CSO3)
Rape oil, sulfated, sodium salt (CSO5)
Castor oil, sulfated, sodium salt (R3)
Rape oil, sulfated, compd. with ethanolammine (CTEA)
Oxygen conditions:
aerobic
Inoculum or test system:
activated sludge (adaptation not specified)
Details on inoculum:
- Source of inoculum/activated sludge (e.g. location, sampling depth, contamination history, procedure): Municipal STP, Hildesheim, D-31137
- Reason of selection: Non adapted activated sludge from the stated sewage plant is well suited as it receives predominantly municipal sewage
- Date of receipt: 2012-04-19
- Storage conditions: The activated sludge was washed twice with autoclaved tap water. After the second washing the settled sludge was resuspended in mineral salts medium and was maintained in an aerobic condition by aeration for 2-4 hours. Thereafter the sludge was homogenized with a blender. The supernatant was decanted and maintained in an aerobic condition for 6 days by aeration with CO2 free air until test start.

- Initial cell/biomass concentration: 10E+7 - 10E+8 CFU/L
Duration of test (contact time):
28 d

- Solubilising agent (type and concentration if used): None
- Test temperature: 21.0 - 23.5 deg C
- pH: 7.8 - 7.9
- pH adjusted: No
- Aeration of dilution water: Yes - 30 - 100 mL/minute
- Continuous darkness: Yes - contained in brown glass bottles

TEST SYSTEM
- Culturing apparatus: Brown glass incubation bottles, 5 L capacity
- Number of culture flasks/concentration: 2 x blank control; 2 x test substance; 1 x inhibition (toxicity) control; 1 x reference substance
- Method used to create aerobic conditions: Carbon dioxide free air at 30 - 100 mL/minute flow rate
- Measuring equipment: Barium hydroxide traps
- Details of trap for CO2 and volatile organics if used: 3 serial scrubbing bottles filled with 100 mL 0.0125 mol/L barium hydroxide solution for the adsorption of carbon dioxide from biodegradation processes. At intervals the Total Inorganic Carbon (TIC) values of the adsorption solutions of the first trap were determined by titration and used for the calculation of the produced carbon dioxide. After each sampling the other traps were moved forward and a new trap with fresh barium hydroxide solution was placed into the final position.

Description of key information

Biodegradation - Readily biodegradable

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

A number of tests of ready biodegradability have been undertaken with representative samples of sulfated oils. A technical problem during the test of the substance "oils, vegetable, sulfated, ammonium salts" occured and it was not possible to finish the test. However, for all samples tested the results obtained demonstrate that sulfated oils, analogues of the substance, are readily biodegradable.
