In the investigation of self-ignition in the Grewer-Oven initially an endothermic process was observed for the pure test item and the test item in mixture with Kieselguhr in the temperature range of 100 -130 °C. This effect is attributed to the melting of the test item. Hence the pure test item flowed out of the wire basket before self-ignition could occur. The test item mixed with Kieselguhr showed a multi-stage self-ignition beginning at a temperature of 130 °C. This self-ignition led to a final temperature of approx. 610 °C.

Conclusions:
The present study was conducted to determine the self-ignition temperature of m-Xylylenebismaleimide according to VDI 2263, sheet1 and with respect to the classification procedure of the UN Transport Regulation (Class 4, Division 4.2) and GHS or EC 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation) Annex 1: 2.11) in a Gewer Oven.
Due to melting of the substance between 100 and 130°C respectively, the substance is considered not to exhibit self-ignition.
