Description of key information
Potassium 12-hydroxystearate is determined to be a white solid at ambient temperature.
The melting point of potassium 12-hydroxystearate is 241 - 248°C.
The boiling point of potassium 12-hydroxystearate could not be determined as the substance decomposed on boiling at temperatures above approximately 364°C.
The relative density of potassium 12-hydroxystearate was determined to be 1.05.
The vapour pressure of potassium 12-hydroxystearate is predicted to be 2.14 E-14 Pa.
The log n-octanol/water partition coefficient (log Kow) of potassium 12-hydroxystearate is <1.
The solubility of potassium 12-hydroxystearate in pure water was determined to be 1.0 ± 0.1 g/L at 20°C.
A 90% saturated solution of potassium 12-hydroxystearate in water has a surface tension of 48.5 mN/m at 20°C.
Under the conditions of the test, potassium 12-hydroxystearate did not ignite by self-heating below a temperature of 400°C.

The estimation of the vapour pressure (VP) was conducted using MPBPVP v1.43 in EPISuite v4.11. In accordance with REACH Regulation Annex XI, studies on vapour pressure do not need to be conducted for this substance as measurement is technically not feasible. Standard test methods, according to OECD guideline 104, are able to measure vapour pressure from 10 x 10-10 Pa to 10 x 10+5 Pa and the predicted vapour pressure of potassium 12-hydroxystearate is outside this range, at 2.14 x 10-14 Pa.
The partition coefficient of potassium 12-hydroxystearate was determined in a GLP-compliant study. The test item was surface active, as established from a consideration of the chemical structure and as shown by direct measurement of the property. By definition of the test methods, the experimental determination of the partition coefficient is not applicable to surface active materials; however, an attempt was made to assess the property by the HPLC method since often the retention time of a material can provide a good indication of the partition coefficient.
The water solubility of potassium 12-hydroxystearate was determined in a GLP-compliant study following OECD guideline 105.
The surface tension of potassium 12-hydroxystearate was determined in a GLP-compliant study following OECD guideline 115. As the surface tension of the substance is less than 60 mN/m, potassium 12-hydroxystearate is considered to be surface active.
