For organic substances is commonly used and accepted a screening evaluation that take into account the degree to which a substance can be oxidized, related to the chemical structure: Oxygen Balance (OB) calculation may be used as a further criterion, in combination with chemical structure evaluation, in order to predict whether a substance has the potential to be an oxidant. The oxygen balance is calculated from the empirical formula of a compound in percentage of oxygen required for complete conversion of carbon to carbon dioxide and hydrogen to water.

The oxygen balance is calculated using the formula:


Oxygen balance = - 1600 [2x + (y/2)-z]/molecular weight;



X = number of atoms of carbon

Y = number of atoms of hydrogen

Z = number of atoms of oxygen


A negative oxygen balance is an indication that substance contains less oxygen than is needed; therefore, it is not expected that substance may, generally by yielding oxygen, cause, or contribute to the combustion of other materials.
