Description of key information

The mean water solubility of the test substance is determined to be < 1.0 mg/L iron at 20°C.

Additional information

In a GLP compliant study, performed according to EU method A.6, the mean water solubility of the test substance was determined (Shell Research and Technology Centre, 1997). Four experiments were performed. The results of the preliminary investigation showed that detectable levels of solubilized material were found alter 24 hours stirring and 24 hours settling. The results of the first study indicated a possible relationship between loading rate of the test substance and the amount of iron containing material present in solution. The second study was carried out with additional loading rates. However, the results of this study did not confirm the expected relationship. The data indicated instead that the high solubility values obtained for the 1 g/L loading may have been erroneous or simply experimental variation. The results from the third study demonstrated that there was no relationship between the loading rates of potassium ferrite and the amount of iron found in the solutions. The differences in the data obtained from the four tests appear to be due to experimental variation. Over the four loading rates of the test substance (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 10 g/L) the mean measured water solubility in the form of iron was <1.0 mg/L.
