Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Slag, pig iron ladle refining, non-granulated, water-cooled can be designated as non-flammable, to have no pyrophoric properties and does not emit flammable gases in contact with water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

Since ferrous slags are inert inorganics with all relevant analytes in their most stable oxidation state, there is no possibility of incineration.

Ferrous slags are formed at temperatures of >1000 °C and therefore virtually free of oxidazable material. Even if oxidizable material would be present (graphite, traces of metal), due to its manufacturing process, slags cannot undergo ignition.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Ferrous slags are not classified because observation, knowledge of the manufacturing method, and analytical information, indicate that these slags are non flammable.

Hence, the substance does not need to be classified according to CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 as highly flammable substance.
