Description of key information

Dichloroacetyl chloride hydrolyzes very fast in the presence of water (half-life  < 0.22 seconds) yielding dichloroacetic acid (DCA) and hydrochloric acid (HCl). The potential aquatic toxicity of DCA (as hydrolysis product of DCAC) was assessed primarly using  data from the analog chloroacetic acid (MCA). The evaluation of available aquatic toxicity data for indicates the acute hazard to fish and aquatic invertebrates is low and hazard to aquatic plants is high.

Dichloroacetic acid and chloroacetic acid are also classified as very toxic to aquatic life (Armonized classification - Aquatic Acute 1, H400).
