Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

In an OECD guideline closed bottle ready biodegradation test, 85% degradation was seen after 28 days when using a micro-organisms seed mixture of synthetic sewage micro-organisms and soil. A significant lag time was seen before degradation commenced. There are insufficient sampling points to be able to determine with certainty whether the 10 day window was met, although the data would suggest that this is more likely to have not been met than to have been met. A conservative interpretation is therefore that the substance is readily biodegradable but fails to meet the 10 day window based on this study.
