Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Since no studies investigating the short-term toxicity of Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, hydrogenated, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 68440-06-2) to fish are available, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read-across to the structurally related source substance Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 68334-05-4) was conducted. The source substance is representative to evaluate the short-term toxicity of the target substance to fish.

The target substance Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, hydrogenated, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 68440-06-2) is characterized by two dimerised fatty acid moieties (C18) esterified with the alcohol component 2-ethylhexanol. The source substance Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 68334-05-4) is characterized as a dimerised ester of two C18:1 fatty acids esterified with 2-ethylhexanol.This read-across is justified in detail in the overall summary (IUCLID Section 6.1) and within the analogue justification in IUCLID Section 13. In this case of read-across, the best suited (highest degree of structural similarity, nearest physico-chemical properties) read-across substance was used for the assessment.

The study with the read-across substance Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, 2-ethylhexyl esters (CAS 68334-05-4) was performed with the freshwater fish Pimephales promelas (Fathead minnow) in a static system according to OECD 203 for 96 h (Swarbrick and Smyth, 2005). As the test substance has a very low water solubility (16 ± 7 µg/L at 20 °C, pH 6.3) water accommodated fractions (WAFs) with a loading rate of 100 mg/L were tested. No effect up to the limit of the water solubility of the tested substance was observed (LL50 > 100 mg/L; NOELR ≥ 100 mg/L).

Based on the available results from a structurally related source substance (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which is characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile and comparable structure, it can be concluded Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, hydrogenated, 2-ethylhexyl esters will not exhibit short-term effects to fish up to the limit of water solubility.
