Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriately low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

As a key study concerning acute toxicity to microorganisms a short-term respiration inhibition test performed by BASF (1981) according to ISO 8192 was identified, using domestic activated sludge as inoculum. Respiration was measured after 30 minutes and 180 minutes. The 30 -min EC20 was determined to be 650 mg/L, based on nominal test concentrations. (BASF AG, 1990).

In addition, there are supporting data from a growth inhibition test with P. putida available. The study was conducted according to DIN 38412, p.8. The 17h-EC50 value was 330 mg/L, while the EC10 value was found to be 210 mg/L (BASF AG, Rep. no.: 9/1900184, 1990).

Based on available data, it can be concluded, that the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge with DBU (CAS 6674 -22 -2) is not anticipated when introduced in appropriately low concentrations.
