Reaction mass of bis(2-hydroxyethanaminium) sulfite and 2-(methylamino)ethanol - oxosulfane oxide (1:1)is soluble in water and dissociates to 2 -(methylamino)ethanol, (2- hydroxyethyl)ammonium and sulphite ions.

Since no studies on the aquatic toxicity of the substance are available, study reports and published literature about the toxic effects of 2-aminoethanol, 2 -(methylamino)ethanol and substances of the sulphite category have been consulted alternatively.

The EC50 values for 48-hour exposure of 2-aminoethanol (CAS 141-43-5) range from 32.6 mg/l to 97 mg/l for Daphnia magna (Huels AG 1997, NITE 1996 and Union Carbide Corporation 1988).

Additionally, a study with the test substance compound 2-(methylamino)ethanol (CAS 109-83-1) is available which was conducted according to EU Method C.2 with the test organism Daphnia magna [BASF AG 1993]. At test termination after 48 hours an EC50 of 33 mg/L (measured) was determined.

The guideline study on the acute toxicity of disodium disulphite (CAS 7681-57-4) and Daphnia magna resulted in an EC50 of 74.9 mg/L (nominal, SO3) after 48 h of exposure. According to the authors, observed effects were related to oxygen depletion as a result of the oxidation of sulphite.
