Stability:

An investigation was conducted on the hydrolysis of diethyl dithiophosphate using Allen's modified method of colorimetry.

Based on the results obtained, a bimolecular nature of hydrolysis involving attack of water molecule is proposed.

Biodegradation:

For an investigation on the biodegradability of O,O-diethyl dithiophosphate, four bacterial strains were isolated from contaminated metalworking fluids. Bacteria were cultured in the presence of the test substance and samples were taken every 5 minutes over a 2 hour period and examined for degradation products.

Ethanol, aldehyde and orthophosphate were identified as breakdown products of O,O-diethyl dithiophosphate.
