Justification for classification or non-classification

Skin irritation/corrosion:

A high quality GLP-compliant skin irritation/corrosivity study was conducted in the rabbit in accordance with internationally accepted guidelines (Jackson, 1994c). No erythema or oedema was recorded in any animal at any time. It is therefore concluded that Bordeaux Mixture is not classified on the basis of skin irritation/corrosivity.

Eye irritation/corrosion:

Adverse effects seen in two GLP-compliant studies were not fully reversible at the end of the obseravtion periods (Griffon, 2000c; Jackson, 1994d). It is therefore concluded that Bordeaux Mixture is classified as follows on the basis of eye irritation/corrosivity:

  • According to Directive 67/548/EEC: Irritant (Xi). R41, risk of serious damage to eyes.
  • According to CLP/GHS: Eye Damage 1, H318: Causes serious eye damage.
