The acute toxicity of the test material to aquatic invertebrates was investigated in Daphnia magna in accordance with the standardised guidelines OECD 202, EU Method C.2, EPA OPPTS 850.1010 and EPA OTS 797.1300. Following a range finding study, 40 daphnia were exposed to a Water Accommodated Fraction (WAF) of the test material, at a single nominal loading rate of 1000 mg/L for a period of 48 hours under static conditions. The number of immobilised daphnia in each test and control vessel were determined 24 and 48 hours after the start of the exposure. Under the conditions of the study, no immobilised daphnia were observed out of the 40 daphnia exposed to a 1000 mg/L loading rate WAF for a period of 48 hours. The EL50 was therefore determined to be in excess of 1000 mg/L loading rate WAF and the No Observed Effect Loading rate determined to be 1000 mg/L loading rate WAF. Samples of the control and 1000 mg/L loading rate WAF were taken at 0 (fresh media) and 24 hours (old media) for Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analysis. The results indicated that a soluble component of the test material was present in the test preparations. Since the test material was a mixture of components, and given that toxicity could therefore not be attributed to a single component or a mixture of components but to the test material as a whole, the results were based on nominal loading rates only.
