Test guideline
- Qualifier:
- no guideline followed
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Female Wistar rats were co-housed overnight in cages with males and examined for sperm the next morning. After confirmation of pregnancy, females were housed 2 animals/cage, and allowed commercial chow and water ad libitum. Benzoic acid was not the primary test article in this study, but was used to prolong clearance of salicylic acid. To this end, a separate group of females received benzoic acid alone on GD 9. Animals were euthanized on GD 20.

Results and discussion
Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Conclusions:
- Although benzoic acid was not the primary subject of this study, one group of 7 females was treated with 510 mg/kg bw benzoic acid to prolong clearance of salicylic acid. Malformations and resorption rates after benzoic acid alone were comparable to those in control animals.
- Executive summary:
Although benzoic acid was not the primary subject of this study, one group of 7 females was treated with 510 mg/kg bw benzoic acid to prolong clearance of salicylic acid. Malformations and resorption rates after benzoic acid alone were comparable to those in control animals.
