The non-GLP short-term toxicity test with C12-16AS Na (CAS 73296-89-6) was performed according to DIN 38412 - L15 guideline (Richterich 2001). Golden orfes (Leuciscus idus) were exposed for 48 hours to five concentrations up to 10 mg/L of 87% pure test substance. The 48-hour LC50 value was determined as 3.6 mg/L (nominal concentration).

Since only the limited short-term fish toxicity data are available for C12-16AS Na (CAS 73296-89-6), in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5, a read-across to other structurally related category members was conducted. Read-across data from the following substances were used C12-14AS Na (CAS 85586-07-8) and C12-18AS Na (CAS 68955-19-1). Toxicity of alkyl sulfates is dependent of the carbon chain length and the influence of the counter ion can be neglected.

Toxicity of C12 -18AS Na (CAS 68955 -19 -1) to fish was investigated in a key, GLP, flow-through study according to OECD guidline 203 with Danio rerio (van Egmond 1993). Fish were exposed to six test concentrations up to 10 mg/L. The 96-hour LC50 value was 1.3 mg/L (nominal concentrations in line with the measured).

A supporting, GLP studies (Wetton, KAO) was conducted with C12-14AS Na (CAS 85586-07-8) according to OECD 203 under semi-static conditions on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). In the first study the fish were exposed to the test concentrations up to 10 mg/L (nominal) for 96 hours. Analytical monitoring was not performed. The reported LC50-value was 3.6 mg/L (nominal concentration). Moreover, toxicity of C12-18AS Na (CAS 68955-19-1) on fish was investigated in a GLP guideline study according to EU method C1 (Scholz 1997). In this semi-static test with the carp Cyprinus carpio, a LC50 (96 h)-value of 17 mg/L (active ingredient) was measured. This study is regarded as key study.

Due to structural and property similarities with the tested category members it can be concluded that the above results apply also to C12 -16AS Na (CAS 73296-89-6). The reliable 96-hour LC50 value is 1.3 mg/L.
