Description of key information
Acutely harmful to aquatic algae.
Hydrolysis product: HCl: Acutely toxic to aquatic algae (pH-dependent)
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
A GLP guideline study was performed according to OECD 201 using Desmodesmus subspicatus as test species. The test solutions were prepared as water-accomodated fractions (WAF) in a geometric series. The loadings were analytically verified by determining the total organic carbon content (TOC) of test replicates without algae, but incubated under the same test conditions. The TOC content increased with the loading up to 40 mg/L. Above this level, no further increase of the TOC content could be observed. The following effect levels were determined based on the nominal loadings: 72 -h ErL50: 72.8 mg/L; 72 -h ErL10: 28.5 mg/L (BASF SE; 2012; project no. 60E0399/11X281).
Hydrolysis product hydrochloric acid (HCl):
The hydrolysis product hydrochloric acid (HCl) was tested in an algae growth inhibition test according to OECD 201 with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The 72-h ErC50was 0.492 mg/L (acid equivalent to pH 5.3), the 72-h NOEC was 0.097 (acid equivalent to pH 6; OECD 2002).
