Description of key information

EC50 (3 h): > 100 mg/L test mat. (nominal) based on respiration rate

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A 3-hour activated sludge respiration inhibition test was performed using activated sludge from a domestic waste treatment plant according to OECD 209. The sludge microorganisms were exposed to five concentration of the test substance at nominal concentrations of 10, 20, 40, 80, and 100 mg/L. The respiration rate, expressed as oxygen consumption by the microbes in mg O2 per liter per hour, was measured under defined conditions following the 3-hour exposure period. Inhibition values were calculated by comparing test respiration rates to negative control rates. The test was valid because the respiration rates of the negative controls were within 15% and the EC50 of the reference substance, 3,5-dichlorophenol, was within the range of 5 to 30 mg/L.

Under the conditions of the test, there was no significant activated sludge respiration inhibition at concentrations of the test substance as high as 100 mg/L.
