The explosivity of glycolic acid 70% solution and the solid form of glycolic acid (glycolic acid >99%) were both investigated according to EU Method A.14. Glycolic acid 70% solution was not found to be sensitive to thermal or impact stimuli. The solid form of glycolic acid (glycolic acid >99%) was not sensitive to impact stimuli, friction, or heating under confinement.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the study results, glycolic acid was not found to be sensitive to thermal, impact or friction stimuli.


The A14 test was relevant according to previous Directive 67/548/EEC "DSD" criteria; based on these, glycolic acid, as solid or solution, was considered NOT to be explosive and did not warrant any classification.


According to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 "CLP", in the stepwise approach, glycolic acid fulfills the exemption criteria regarding the lack of chemical group associated with explosive properties in the structure. Therefore no further testing is required. Both >99% grade and 70% solution do NOT warrant any classification for explosivity.
