Description of key information

There are several OECD 203 guideline GLP studies with nominal test concentrations above 10000 mg/L with methacrylic acid esters of different alcohol mixtures (C12 - C16). They showed no toxicity to fish.
Therefore, it appears that saturated solutions of the long-chain methacrylate esters are non-toxic to fish.

Additional information

LC50 [96 h] > 10000 mg / L

Concentrations used in the available tests are up to five orders of magnitude above the water solubility of the long-chain methacrylate esters (C12 – C22) which is < 1 µg/l. Therefore, emulsions or even two-layer systems of the esters with water have been tested instead of solutions setting a limitation to the validity of the studies. However, it appears that saturated solutions of the long-chain methacrylate esters are non-toxic to fish. Further acute toxicity to fish studies on long-chain methacrylate esters with limited documentation are confirming these test results.
