Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Based on the available data on its physical and chemical properties, heptanoic acid is a clear oily liquid with a melting point of approximately - 8°C at standard pressure, a boiling point of 223°C at standard pressure and a relative density of around 0,92 at 20°C. It is considered as a low volatility substance with a vapor pressure of 1,349 Pa at 20°C and 2,201 Pa at 25°C. It has a viscosity of 3.40 mPa.s at 30° C.

It is considered as soluble in water based on a water solubility between 1955 mg/L and 5316 mg/L, and to have a low potential for bioaccumulation based on a predicted logKow value of 2,54. It pKa of 4,75 indicates that heptanoic acid will exist almost entirely in the anion form at pH values of 5 to 9 and therefore volatilization from water surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process.

Besides, heptanoic acid has been shown to be non-flammable based on its flash point of 117°C and it has an auto-ignition temperature of 275°C.

Based on its chemical structure, heptanoic acid is not expected to be explosive nor to have oxidising properties.
