- Executive summary:
A preliminary test was conducted on the test substance, biphenyl, 4,4'-diol according to EU Method A.10. A hot flame from a gas burner was applied until the test substance ignited. Within the ignition zone the test item melted to a black liquid, which also burns. After 4 minutes approximately 1 cm of the cluster was burned down. As the flame did not propagate along the train for over 200 mm then a full test programme is not required. The substance can be classified as non-flammable.

In the preliminary study, 4,4 -Biphenol was flammable within 2 min by the flame of a gas burner. Within the ignition zone the test item melted to a black liquid, which also burns. After 4 minutes approximately 1 cm of the cluster was burned down. The test item burned to a black-grey, carbonized residuum.
According to the EU method A.10., as propagation of the flame did not occur over 200 mm of the train then a full test programme is not required.
