Potassium 2-methylbutan-2-olate hydrolyses rapidly into potassium hydroxide (CAS No. 1310-58-3) and 2-methylbutan-2-olate (CAS No. 75-85-4) in the presence of water. Therefore, the toxicity to aquatic organisms is mediated by the two hydrolysis products. The classification of the environmental hazard according to CLP Regulation No. 1272/2008 is also based on the hydrolysis products. According to the published dossiers on the dissemination homepage of ECHA, the hydrolysis products sodium hydroxide and 2-methylbutan-2-olate showed no harmful effects on aquatic organisms and both are not classified for environmental hazard.
